HAWLEY, P. Being Bright Is Not Enough: The Unwritten Rules of Doctoral Study (Springfield, Ill.: Charles C. Thomas, 1993)
I do not want to be one of the statistics – i.e. PhD students end up merely ABD. She advocates that I get a knowledgeable Chair, which I have done in A. Yong. The function of the proposal was most illuminating: it is a ‘contract’ between you and the faculty. The elements of the proposal include the cover page, the abstract, the problem (chapter 1), a review of the literature (chapter 2), and the methodology (chapter 3). Also, it aids in grant-writing preparation, and could serve as the first 3 chapters of the dissertation more or less. The writing style of the dissertation is scientific and technical, lacking jovial talk, etc. I should expect an adversarial relationship between myself and Regent University, she claims, in defending my proposal. In the writing stage, make time, save time, and guard time, as it is an invaluable commodity – at least four hours a day. At the end of your dissertation, give a pointer to further research to be done in the field.
